“Tap water in parts of the Haut-Rhin département, near the commune of Saint-Louis, has been found to contain two to four times the permissible levels of harmful “forever chemicals” known as PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoralkyl substances.”

“PFAS can raise cholesterol levels, weaken immune systems and decrease fertility in women, as well as cause developmental problems in children and increase the risk of liver damage. They are often used in pesticides, cosmetics, fast-food packaging and everyday household products such as non-stick pans.”

Water to Go is delighted to be supporting Kids At School In Nepal ( Kasin) a UK charity which works to help educate the most needy children in Nepal.

Kids at School in Nepal (KASIN) was founded in 2005 as a small charity and is making a big difference to the lives of hundreds of Nepali children. All children have the right to a good education. We are helping children from disadvantaged communities in rural Nepal to realise their full potential. The trustees of the charity do not claim expenses and all the money we raise is used to provide opportunities for needy communities in Nepal. We don’t have an office or have administration expenses.

After School Clubs

We have 6 After Schools Clubs and we have found that they are amongst the most cost- effective ways of improving Education in more marginalised communities in Nepal. They provide a safe place to be after school for 2 or 3 hours and the children receive help with their Reading and Maths. Many of the parents are not educated and their homes often have no electricity.

Please give a donation

By donating today you can make a big difference. The schools we support have a desperate need for even the most basic requirements so, give as much as you can afford knowing that our charity is wholly maintained by volunteers so the maximum amount can go directly to support these schools.

❤   Donation

You could make a regular donation by setting up a standing order.

Or you could make a bequest in your will. Find out more here.

Visit the Charity Commission website, enter our charity number 1111461 for an overview of our fundraising.

1. Research and Plan Your Itinerary

Thailand offers a diverse range of experiences, from the bustling streets of Bangkok to the serenity of Chiang Mai’s temples. To make the most of your trip, research the places you want to visit and create a rough itinerary. Consider the following destinations:

  • Bangkok: As the vibrant and colourful capital city of Thailand, there are so many amazing things to do in Bangkok. Explore the Grand Palace, visit the floating markets, and indulge in the city’s famous street food.
  • Chiang Mai: Known for its beautiful temples and laid-back atmosphere, Chiang Mai is perfect for those seeking a more relaxed experience. Visit the ancient temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, explore the city’s bustling night markets, and take a Thai cooking class.
  • The Islands: Thailand is home to numerous breathtaking islands, such as Koh Phi Phi, Koh Tao, and Koh Samui. Each offers a unique experience, from scuba diving and snorkeling to relaxing on white-sand beaches.

2. Pack Light and Smart

When backpacking in Thailand, it’s essential to pack light and smart. Opt for lightweight, quick-drying clothes, and don’t forget a rain jacket for the occasional downpour. Limit your footwear to a pair of comfortable walking shoes or sandals and a pair of flip-flops. Remember, you can always buy cheap clothes and other necessities in local markets. Other essential items include:

  • A lightweight, waterproof backpack
  • Travel towel
  • Reusable shopping bag
  • Padlock for hostel lockers
  • Universal travel adapter
  • Portable charger

3. Get Your Travel Documents in Order

Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in Thailand. Most nationalities can obtain a 30-day visa exemption on arrival, but double-check the visa requirements for your country before departure. Keep digital and physical copies of your travel documents, including passport, visa, travel insurance, and vaccination records. It’s also a good idea to have a list of emergency contacts and the address and contact information of your country’s embassy in Thailand.

4. Stay Healthy and Safe

Visit a travel clinic or your doctor to discuss any vaccinations or medications you may need for your trip. Common recommendations include Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Don’t forget to pack a basic first aid kit, insect repellent, and sunscreen. To stay safe, follow these tips:

  • Use reputable transportation services
  • Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas
  • Keep your belongings secure and avoid displaying expensive items
  • Be cautious when accepting drinks from strangers
  • Follow local laws and regulations

5. Stay Hydrated with Water-to-Go Water Filter Bottles

Access to clean drinking water is essential when backpacking in Thailand. The Water-to-Go water filter bottle is a game-changer for backpackers, allowing you to fill up from any non-saltwater source and have clean, safe drinking water on the go. The bottle’s advanced filtration system removes over 99.9% of microbiological contaminants, ensuring you stay hydrated and healthy throughout your trip. This eco-friendly solution also helps reduce plastic waste by eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles.

@highlands2hammocks Been using Water to go bottles and filters for 4 years and will always shout about how amazing they are! #filterwater #watertogo #baliindonesia🇮🇩🌴🌴 #travelbottle ♬ Every Second – Mina Okabe

6. Learn Basic Thai Phrases

While English is widely spoken in tourist areas, learning a few basic Thai phrases can go a long way in making your trip more enjoyable and immersive. Locals will appreciate your effort, and it can help you navigate your way around the country with ease. Some useful phrases include:

  • Hello: Sawasdee (krub/kah) – add “krub” for men and “kah” for women
  • Thank you: Khop khun (krub/kah)
  • Excuse me/Sorry: Khor thoad (krub/kah)
  • How much?: Thao rai?
  • Yes: Chai
  • No: Mai chai

7. Be Respectful of Local Culture and Customs

Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country, and it’s essential to be respectful of local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting temples, and always remove your shoes before entering. Avoid pointing your feet at people or statues, as it’s considered disrespectful. Lastly, never touch a Thai person’s head, as it is considered the most sacred part of the body. By being mindful of these cultural norms, you’ll foster positive interactions with locals and gain a deeper understanding of Thai culture.

By following these tips and incorporating the Water-to-Go water filter bottle into your backpacking essentials, you’ll be well-prepared for your adventure in Thailand. Embrace the local culture, explore the diverse landscapes, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Happy travels!

Hiking and climbing in Kurullangala

It’s actually a very intense hike and we were the very first foreigners to do it – Rick

Kurullangala lies in the area of Karandagolla which is a part of the Ella in the Badulla District. It is difficult to reach the top, but once you are there you will see beautiful structures of cave art that are set in such a breathtaking view that makes you wonder whether you are in that era at that time. The intricate drawing that has been done to precision consists of large birds, peacocks, forms of humans and rock art that cannot be identified and all this is supposed to be over 5000 years old.

Water-to-Go is pleased to report that Foxley Kingham, our local business advisors and colleagues entered their second charity bike in September 2022.

Joining hundreds of other cyclists on the 64-mile ride in the beautiful Essex countryside, they raised funds for their Anniversary Foundation. More info can be found here cycle challenge page.

The team had all been training hard with early starts, muscle aches and pains.  This was a longer challenge than last year and meant well over 5 hours in the saddle and 5 weeks to recover but was well worth it to support their local charity partner.  This year Foxley Kingham are supporting Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Charity’s Emergency Department Appeal (supporting CAMHS), CHUMS and Mind BLMK.

We are proud to sponsor the team and their worthy cause.

Why You Need A Water Filter When Traveling In Latin America

Travelling through Latin America is a dream for most people, but for those planning to make it a reality, there’s an important factor we need to talk about.

And that’s making sure you have safe drinking water for the entirety of your journey.

Here’s the thing:

While some countries in Latin America boast that they have clean drinking water from the taps, there are many more that don’t.

And this can lead to having to buy fresh water bottles from the store daily, which isn’t good for your pocket or the environment.

Let’s take a look:

Why Plastic Water Bottles Are Bad For The Environment

Over the last few years, it’s been extremely well documented that plastic bottles are bad for the environment. But many of you might not understand why they are detrimental to the earth’s health, which is what I want to explain to you here:

In America alone, 17 million barrels of oil are used to produce enough disposable plastic water bottles to meet the demand, and this is a considerable amount of natural resources being used.

To make things worse:

The Container Recycling Institute states that 86% of these plastic bottles end up in landfills instead of being recycled.

And that’s in America!

While travelling to Latin America, I noticed the amount of plastic waste that litters the streets and beaches.

They just don’t have the same street cleaning and garbage disposal level. The one good thing is some people pick up plastic bottles to sell to recycling companies, but it barely makes a difference.

And things don’t get better:

When plastic water bottles are exposed to the weather, they start to leave behind microplastic, which kills more marines than you could ever imagine.

This is why we need to start looking at other solutions!

What Can You Use Instead for safe water?

Using a reusable water bottle is a great idea for reducing the amount of plastic you use, but it doesn’t solve the problem of finding pure water.

At times, I’ve been lucky in my travels, and I’ve been able to drink from the tap, but that’s pretty rare in most parts of South America.

And this is why it was so important for me to find a water filtration system that worked on the go and wasn’t too big to travel with.

Ultimately, I opted for the Water-to- Go Water Filter bottles when Traveling on my journeys In Latin America, their filter bottles worked a treat.

They use nanotechnology filters that take any impurities from the tap water and leave you safe, filtered water you can enjoy without worrying you’ll get sick.

For anyone planning to travel through Latin America, I would highly recommend you find a water bottle that filters the water before you drink from it.

Honestly, it’s been a lifesaver for me and significantly reduced the amount of plastic waste I generated throughout my travels.

So, not only is it good for you, but it’s excellent for the environment!

Jason Fox

I’m a UK-born writer with exceptional experience in the outdoors. While growing up in the UK, I spent my time in the army cadets and working as an outdoor instructor teaching climbing and survival.

Now, I spend my time as a digital nomad travelling through Latin America. I reside in Mexico after travelling to various countries on the continent.
